“In this world, there is a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we’ve left behind, and dreaming ahead.”
― Tony Kushner
Angels, angels everywhere. Ever since Kushner’s acclaimed play burst onto the scene in 1993, it’s taken the theatre world by storm – a tempest kicked up by the wings of hundreds of different iterations of the angel figure. Take a stroll down memory lane and see how a number of different productions imagined this pivotal role:
1993, Original Broadway production
1997, Theater Dortmund
2001, Guilford College
2003, HBO series
2004, American Conservatory Theatre
2010, Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf’s commemoration of Amsterdam’s DeLaMar Theatre’s opening
2010, Signature Theatre
Which version is the most effective? It’s remarkable that despite their physical/design differences, these angels are all relatively close in terms of presentation.

loved it!!!
Thanks!
I love all of these and can see the whole production in my head just from these snippets
I know, right? I need to go back and rewatch the HBO version.
that was an incredible one for sure. are you doing any theater at the moment? what are your plans? (I know that is a very general question for a blog comment)
Very cool pics! Love this entry!
Glad you liked! Thank you.

I saw the HBO mini-series a few years ago and loved it, thanks for reminding me! It would be nice to see a production tackle a more radical representation of the angels though.
This is a brilliant piece x
Exactly, I would love to see a director try something completely different with the angel, and just see if it would still have the revelatory effect. Thanks Lily!
This was awesome, especially because I’m ignorant enough I didn’t even know about the play. *blushes* Now I do, and I’ll make sure to find time to check it out somehow. It also reminded me of my favorite “angel” song, “Wings” by Echo’s Children. I love the concept of a lost angel. It’s a beautiful idea that I may have to explore further in poems. Thank you for sharing!
Hrrm…didn’t know it’d do that. Hope it’s ok and doesn’t break some rule of blogging etiquette. I’m fairly new to all this. 😉
Hey, no worries. I love getting introduced to new music anyway. And now we’ve both learned something! Thanks for sharing KC!
Hi,
The costumes are gorgeous, so well done, but I have to say I particularly like the ones in the 1st photo and the 2nd photo the best. 😀
The bigger wings are especially impressive that’s for sure. Thanks for your input!
